Camac harps, rented by the academic year

Instrumentis rents Camac harps, bought direct from the workshop at Mouzeil in France. There are two models: the Mélusine lever harp with 38 strings, for the beginner and intermediate years, and the Égérie pedal harp with 47 strings, for the intermediate and advanced player.

The instruments are nearly new — currently two to three years old — and still inside Camac’s manufacturer warranty. That is not the norm: rental harps in this market are often twenty years old, or the "rental" is a rent-to-own contract by another name.

A rental runs for the full academic year and renews yearly for as long as the student needs the instrument. Rates are published below and are the same for everyone. We ask for no deposit.

Every product failure, repair and regulation is ours to carry, for the whole rental. The renter replaces strings, which are consumables, and looks after the instrument.

Why rent

The instrument changes as the player does

A harpist moves from the lever harp to the pedal harp, and from a first pedal harp to a larger one. A bought instrument has to be sold again at every step. A rented one is simply exchanged at the end of the academic year.

What buying costs

A new lever harp of this class is about €3,500; a new student pedal harp €15,000 and up. A year of rental is a fraction of that: €600 for the Mélusine, €1,920 for the Égérie.

Used harps hide their faults

A failure in the soundboard, the neck or the mechanism means a €6,000 to €10,000 repair. Which harp will develop a fault like that is something even top technicians often struggle to predict. On a rented instrument that risk stays with us.

Renting tests the commitment first

When ownership is earned after years of diligent study, the new harpist usually stays a musician for life. Bought too early, the prize has already been handed over, and the harp soon becomes furniture with an emotional attachment. Teachers tell us that students who rent study more.

The Mélusine is a full-size, performance-capable lever harp — one of the best and one of the most expensive student Celtic harps, not a scaled-down beginner instrument.

The Mélusine has been in production for over forty years. Camac call it a benchmark in its field, and it is the choice of many music schools and conservatoires.

Semitone levers are fitted to all 38 strings, not to part of the range. Nylon strings, wound basses.

At 14.5 kg a student carries it unaided and it goes in any car — this is the harp that travels to the lesson and back.

The Égérie is fast becoming the choice of European harp schools and of competitions worldwide. The sound and the feel are the reason.

In our opinion Camac has made great improvements in the sound quality of student harps over the last fifteen years, while much of the established competition has mostly focused on reducing the material quality of their student models.

A full 47 strings means no page of the conservatoire repertoire is out of reach — unlike the smaller 40- and 44-string pedal models, which a student eventually outgrows.

Collection and return in Ljubljana is free, for both models.
In the Ljubljana region, delivery is free.
Elsewhere inside the two-hour zone — all of Slovenia, plus Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Kärnten, Steiermark — delivery is €220 both ways, for both models.
Elsewhere in Italy, pedal harps travel by courier for €330 both ways.
Elsewhere in Austria, pedal harps are collection only.
Celtic harps are never sent by courier. Outside the two-hour zone we do not rent them.

Terms

Term: The full academic year, autumn to autumn.
No short-term rental: We rent for the complete school year only, including the summer months when the instrument is not in demand. We do not write shorter agreements.
Renewal: At the end of the year you can extend for a further academic year, move to a different instrument as the student progresses, or return it — because the student has stopped, or because it is time to buy a harp.
Billing: Mélusine half-yearly in advance; Égérie monthly in advance.
Deposit: None.
Condition: Every harp is two to three years old and still covered by Camac’s manufacturer warranty.
Repairs and servicing: Instrumentis covers every product failure, repair and regulation of the action, for the whole rental.
The renter’s part: Replacing strings, which are consumables, and the safe care of the instrument.
Delivery and collection: Collection in Ljubljana is free. Delivery inside the two-hour zone for both models, courier shipping for pedal harps only; prices by region are under Delivery. Every price covers both directions and the transit risk is ours.
